Good News: Terrifying Turns Terrific

When industrial designer Doug Dietz saw firsthand the trauma that young children feel when undergoing MRI testing, he decided to design MRI machines that made the process an exciting adventure instead. Along with GE Healthcare and the University of Pittsburgh Hospital, Dietz created kid-friendly environments for these young patients. One MRI design has the kids lying down inside a “canoe” and they’re asked to keep still and “not rock the boat.” If they stay still, they’re rewarded with animated fish jumping overhead. Other designs offer aromatherapy, bubbles, calming decorations, and disco balls.  Once again, an imaginative idea solves a real-world problem!
